Help me create a world free of ALS
Help me create a world free of ALS
This spring we will be participating in the Walk to End ALS. ALS (Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis) or Lou Gehrig’s disease is a rapidly progressive and fatal neuromuscular disease that is characterized by degeneration of a select group of nerve cells and pathways (motor neurons) in the brain and spinal cord. This loss of motor neurons leads to progressive paralysis of the voluntary muscles. This is a non-curative disease. We lost our dad and grandfather to this disease at the end of 2023. He first experienced symptoms in June, was in a wheelchair by the fall and sadly lost his battle in December. With my dad’s severe and rapid symptom on set our family was at a loss on how to help support him. The ALS Association was there to help. We were provided mobility chairs, cushions, a hoyer lift and other essential items all at no charge. If it was not for this association my father would not have been able to live his last months in the comfort of his home with his family by his side.
The ALS Association is not primarily government-funded. It is a non-profit organization that relies heavily on donations to support its programs, including research, care services, and advocacy. Now more than ever, the ALS community needs our support to provide hope and help to families affected by ALS/MND. That’s why we're joining thousands of others, a part of a passionate and motivated community to “walk” in celebration of hope and a world free of ALS. Please consider supporting us and donating towards this important cause.
Your support will help to:
- create a better day-to-day reality for people and families living with ALS by providing community-based support throughout Manitoba as well as necessary medical equipment like wheelchairs, liftchairs, mobility aids and other items that increase safety in the home, at no cost to those who need them.
- further scientific progress by investing in the ALS Canada Research Program, which funds promising ALS research. This program provides peer-reviewed grants to researchers whose work has the greatest potential to advance the field of ALS. There’s been more progress made in ALS research in the last five years than over the last century – we need to keep building on this momentum.
Join us in making a difference. Please consider donating to this fundraising page as we work towards a world free of ALSMND.
Your support is needed now more than ever - we are stronger together!
