Help our team create a world free of ALS

Hello Family and Friends  --

Five years ago this June, we lost our beautiful and wonderful Reggie Moriarty to ALS.  On Saturday, June 1st we will be remembering her and supporting the cause at the ALS Society of Canada’s Walk to End ALS.  The purpose of this message is to invite you to join us and/or contribute to getting closer to a cure for amyotrophic lateral sclerosis — a devastating nervous system disease that kills roughly 80 per cent of those afflicted within two to five years.

As you may have heard and seen on media this past week, research investment is paying off:

“Western University researchers unlock potential 'cure' for ALS ….. New research out of Ontario’s Western University is shedding light on the interaction between two proteins that can halt or fully reverse the disease's progression.” ….. “A peer-reviewed paper, published in the journal Brain, may also pave the way to potential treatments for other neurodegenerative diseases, including frontotemporal dementia.”  Breakthroughs like this are motivating – we’re making a difference.

Following mom’s diagnosis, we formed Reggie’s Ramblers and (less COVID) have participated in this annual event.  One year we raised $4700!  Our family is particularly fond of the ALS Society because in our time of desperate need its people were there not only with explanations, but with lots of necessary tools – like electric armchair, hospital bed, speech-generating device, professional counselling and more – which let us keep mom at home well taken care of until the inevitable end.

Please  note that the walk is at the Tony Graham Recreation Complex and Walter Baker Park in Kanata.  One way or another, please join Reggie’s Ramblers on June 1st.  If you can’t come, please donate.

Note: Your support will help to:

  • Create a better day-to-day reality for people and families living with ALS by providing community-based support throughout Ontario – like home visits and support groups – as well as necessary medical equipment like hospital beds, wheelchairs, stairlifts and other items that increase safety in the home, at no cost to those who need them.
  • Further scientific progress by investing in the ALS Canada Research Program, which funds promising ALS research. The ALS Canada Research Program is the only national dedicated source of funding for ALS research across Canada. This program provides peer-reviewed grants to researchers whose work has the greatest potential to advance the field of ALS. There’s been more progress made in ALS research in the last five years than over the last century – we need to keep building on this momentum.

Join our team in making a difference. Please consider donating to our team fundraising page as we work toward a world free of ALS.

Your support is needed now more than ever – we are stronger together!
