Our research:

Cells are the building blocks of organs. Neurons are specialized cells responsible for relaying messages in and to the brain. In neurodegenerative diseases such as ALS, neurons die. Within cells, proteins are the work horses, performing functions required for communication and cell survival. To perform effectively, proteins must be precisely directed to specific locations within the cell. One of the earliest events in nearly all neurodegenerative diseases is proteins mislocalize, causing proteins to perform the wrong function in the wrong site of the cell. Think of finding your car parked in your kitchen. The car might function properly, but it’s probably going to get your way. Therefore, ensuring proteins map to the right sites in neurons represents one of the earliest therapeutic targets in neurodegeneration. We study how to redirect proteins and how to help the cell break them down when they’ve gone rogue.

Walk to End ALS 

This year, with the support of the Faculty of Science and the Office of Indigenous Relations, we will be hosting the local Walk to End ALS at the University of Waterloo at the Outdoor Gathering Space.

This spring, we will be participating in the ALS Canada Walk to End ALS. Now more than ever, the ALS community needs our support to provide hope and help to families affected by ALS. That’s why we're joining thousands of others, a part of a passionate and motivated community to “walk” in celebration of hope and a world free of ALS. • Further scientific progress by investing in the ALS Canada Research Program, which funds promising ALS research. The ALS Canada Research Program is the only national dedicated source of funding for ALS research across Canada. This program provides peer-reviewed grants to researchers whose work has the greatest potential to advance the field of ALS. There’s been more progress made in ALS research in the last five years than over the last century – we need to keep building on this momentum.  
• Create a better day-to-day reality for people and families living with ALS by providing community-based services throughout Ontario – this includes home visits and support groups – as well as necessary medical equipment like hospital beds, wheelchairs, stairlifts, and other items that increase safety in the home, at no cost to those who need them.
