It’s been a while since I retired from the military as a pilot, but one lesson from those days has never left me. When turbulence or other challenges come up, you can’t stop. You steady yourself, focus on what’s in front of you, and keep on going no matter what.

That mindset has carried me through many things in my life, but it has been especially important in my journey with ALS.

My name is Bob Gibson, I’m 68 years old, and I was diagnosed with ALS in December 2023.

Thankfully, my military mantra kicked in: keep pushing forward. I can’t change my diagnosis or future, but I can do everything in my power to change things for others. I can push for more investment, research, education, and awareness.

The ALS Canada Walk to End ALS is one way I can actively help people living with ALS now and in the future. Last year my team, ‘Gibby’s Finest’ raised more than $17,000, which will directly support the national ALS Canada Research Program, drive advocacy efforts, and provide community-based support to people and families living with ALS.

We’re walking again this year, and I hope you’ll register or fundraise today and join us, along with thousands more from the community.

We all need to steer this plane together, to keep on flying until we reach the ultimate destination: a world free of ALS.
