Let's give those with ALS a hand and work with and for them

Most of you will know Mark Hayes and some will not.

Early last year, Mark could not figure out what was affecting his breathing and  after many tests in October he received the devastating news that he had ALS.  It has progressed fast.

For those, who do not know Mark.  He was an amazing police officer, and is an even greater father, brother, partner, leader, coach, volunteer, friend and all around great person.  Mark gave tirelessly back to the community, whether coaching soccer / track or guiding visually impaired on the ski hills.  Personally, I knew Mark from my early days as a police officer, where he was a Tactical Unit Sergeant that I looked up to, and to this day consider a mentor of mine.  He was funny with his sharp wit and one of the most honest / hard working people I have known.  The irony in this cruel disease, is its randomness- Mark was one of the fittest people I have ever known, yet that did not protect him.  Over the 35 years of friendship, like many, I am fortunate to have as one of my closest friends.

Please join me in supporting the fight against ALS and in honour of Mark.  Here is how you can help support Mark or get behind the fight against ALS:
1) We are putting a team together for this walk in Ottawa. You are more than welcome to join our team in walking on June 1st in support of Mark.  We are amassing quite the team.   Details on this website, or reach out to Murray or I.
2) You can make a donation to help figure out and fight this horrific disease.
3) You can buy a t-shirt for this day / walk, with a unique team logo in support of Mark- athletic wick-away (if interested in a tee- lmk your size- they are $30 ).
4) You can share this with friends / far & wide.

We are confident that we are going to show our City / community, how big and strong the family is,  in support of Mark and the fight against ALS.

Information on what your donation will help is below.

Now more than ever, the ALS community needs our support to provide hope and help to families affected by ALS. That’s why we're joining thousands of others, a part of a passionate and motivated community to “walk” in celebration of hope and a world free of ALS. Please consider supporting our team and donating towards this important cause.

Your support will help to:

  • Create a better day-to-day reality for people and families living with ALS by providing community-based support throughout Ontario – like home visits and support groups – as well as necessary medical equipment like hospital beds, wheelchairs, stairlifts and other items that increase safety in the home, at no cost to those who need them.
  • Further scientific progress by investing in the ALS Canada Research Program, which funds promising ALS research. The ALS Canada Research Program is the only national dedicated source of funding for ALS research across Canada. This program provides peer-reviewed grants to researchers whose work has the greatest potential to advance the field of ALS. There’s been more progress made in ALS research in the last five years than over the last century – we need to keep building on this momentum.
