Celebrating 70 for Steve

For a more significant birthday of mine in May, I am inviting family and friends to donate to the "Walk To End ALS" (link above- go to Stepping Up For Steve) for my friend Steven Gallagher. I have known Steven for about 10 years and he has been living with ALS the past 4 years with ridiculously creative, and passionate HOPE.

Steve's daughter Olivia and wife Tiffany will be leading the charge on Saturday, June 1. Steve will not be physically present due to increasing care needs but he will be their greatest cheerleader.

In a recent visit with Steve, I asked him about the prolific accolades he continues to receive around his bravery and courage. While I know he appreicates those, he sees his situation differently:
"Bravery is when someone chooses to do something above and beyond and heroic. Like putting your life on the line by running into a burning building to save someone. Or volunteering to fight in a war against a tyrannical leader. Those are brave choices. I didn't choose to have this disease. I'm doing what others do when they get a bad diagnosis, I am living my life. That is not being brave. I would say that I try to remain positive which is something I am proud of. I have down moments that my family is more likely to experience. Hope for me is believing that I will be here for a while. Hope for advances in care. Hope for a better day tomorrow. Hope for more time with my family. I'm hopeful but I don't see myself as being brave."

Will you donate on my behalf for Steve?

Your support will help to:

  • Create a better day-to-day reality for people and families living with ALS by providing community-based support throughout Ontario – like home visits and support groups – as well as necessary medical equipment like hospital beds, wheelchairs, stairlifts and other items that increase safety in the home, at no cost to those who need them.
  • Further scientific progress by investing in the ALS Canada Research Program, which funds promising ALS research. The ALS Canada Research Program is the only national dedicated source of funding for ALS research across Canada. This program provides peer-reviewed grants to researchers whose work has the greatest potential to advance the field of ALS. There’s been more progress made in ALS research in the last five years than over the last century – we need to keep building on this momentum.
