Let's strike ALS off the world's bucket list!
Let's strike ALS off the world's bucket list!
In November 2000, Mark Freedman stood on top of the world, literally. He was crowned the WABDL World Champion powerlifter in the deadlift, lifting 479.5 pounds. He was named the best lifter pound-for-pound across the 114 to 198 weight classes for his age group of 34 to 39.
That was Mark at 39. Focused on a goal and determined to see just how far hard work, dedication, willpower and stubbornness (!) could take him.
Mark has spent his life doing amazing things. After a career in animation with his cousin, in Vancouver bringing characters to life on screen, he returned to Ottawa and has worked for over 20 years as a financial planner, helping families secure their futures. He is a son, a brother, an uncle, a cousin, a colleague, and a friend who has always been there for everyone around him.
Today, at 65, Mark walks with a cane and assisted-foot orthotics. ALS (amyotrophic lateral sclerosis) has been slowly taking away the very thing he worked a lifetime to build: his health and ability to move.
That contrast isn't lost on any of us who know him.
But here is what ALS has not taken away.
Since his diagnosis in May 2025, Mark joined a Phase 2 clinical trial. He is participating in multiple research studies, giving data that may come too late to help him personally, but will hopefully help the next person diagnosed after him He has already donated blood 116 times over his lifetime. And he has registered his intent to donate his organs.
A world champion powerlifter who, when told he was losing his body, immediately asked how he could give more of it away.
That’s why we’re walking. Now it's our turn to show up for Mark.
We are the ALS Freed-om Fighters - family, friends, and colleagues who refuse to let ALS go unanswered. On June 6th, 2026, we will walk together in Ottawa in the ALS Canada Walk to End ALS. Mark will walk with us, cane in hand or with a walker, wearing our originally designed team t-shirt.
Every dollar raised goes directly toward ALS research and community support for Ontario families living with this disease. And in 2026, all funds raised are being earmarked for a match from Brain Canada, up to $1 million, meaning your donation will have an even greater impact.
ALS has one unchecked box on the world's bucket list. Help us check it.
